The Campus Landscape Enhancement Project develops a revitalized campus identity, future campus growth strategy, sustainability, and establishes a campus core through a generous donation of one of the founding families of the University, the McDermott family. At the northern terminus between the McDermott Library and the Student Union sits a new student plaza that includes bleechers, a granite fountain complete with mist column, and an overhead steel trellis with a temperature-modifying shade structure design. The mall includes 116 hand-picked, custom pruned columnar ‘Claudia Wannamaker’ Magnolias residing alongside five reflecting pools. Leading to the mall, University Drive, returns more than 5,500 hand-picked native trees to the site, individually arranged to re-establish the native ranch land forests of Texas.
